The weather has not been ideal for the type of photography I usually enjoy doing, but the harsh sunlight normally suits black and white making use of the contrast to emphasise textures and patterns. So I took the chance to explore the cathedral quarter in Lincoln in the early evening. Doubling down on the contrast I decided to shoot into the sun to try and get a starburst. I think the cobbles came out nicely…
When I say I like black and white, not all of my images take it quite so literally. I quite like the minimalism of this, but I am aware that many will not be quite so enthusiastic. It would look good printed large though…?
I see a lot of mono images that take monochrome to extremes – just shades of grey, with no contrast. That is why I prefer black and white as a term. So the image today is a bit of a rebellion against grey. Contrast prevails, thanks to a flooded river Trent.

Porlock Weir in Devon is a really interesting place to visit, and for long exposure photography when the tide is right. As you can guess from this image, I have yet to visit when the tide is right.
