  • The New

    Did you guess right? Now guess the next one, which is very Coventry themed…
    The walls of the new cathedral are breathtaking and it is difficult to do them justice. This is the Baptismal wall. The random rock in the foreground is actually the baptismal font. The three tonne boulder was presented to the cathedral by the government of Jordan as a symbol of unity between the monotheist faiths, and was sourced from a location near Bethlehem. It is also referred to as the Bethlehem Boulder.
    Another thread to the story of the boulder is that the font bowl was carved by Ralph Beyer, born in Berlin, who served in the British army in WW2, and whose mother was murdered in Auschwitz.

  • The old

    The old cathedral in Coventry still has some amazing features still intact. On the right hand side you can see there is an entrance to the Blitz museum. Sadly quite a few of the artifacts from the second world war did not seem that ancient to me. On the left hand side is a walkway leading to the entrance of the new cathedral. Can you guess the title of the next post?

  • Survival

    This image is not particularly good, and is a heavy crop to show something I did not even see. Yesterday we went to Coventry Cathedral. The old cathedral was heavily damaged in a bombing raid in 1940, but a lot of the remains are in place next to the new cathedral. This window arch is part of that old cathedral, and you can still see what is left of the stained glass – 86 years later!
    Mind blown.

  • Cathedral

    Honestly, I would forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on! The point of my visit to Lincoln was to capture the Cathedral, although I had no idea of the surrounding evironment. And then I didn’t upload a photo of said Cathedral. So here it is. And for the benefit of any US viewers – yes the timbered houses around the Cathedral are indeed older than your country…

  • St David’s

    St David’s is a city in Wales and is the smallest cathedral city in the UK based on population count. I thought it was really kind of them to name a city after me, so had to visit. Normally I tend to go for the stained glass windows, but this suspended sculpture caught my eye. I really liked the contrast between the cold wall framing the warmer interior, caused both by the lighting and the warmth of the wooden sculpture.

  • Inverted

    As I wrote the title for this post I was reminded of “while my guitar gently weeps” lyrics. And then of the cover version with Prince’s guitar solo. Definitely worth a listen. But I digress.
    I took this at Gloucester Cathedral, where there is a conveniently placed mirror. The original photo was ok, but when I turned it upside down it improved tremendously. Try standing on your head to have a look, and see if you agree.

  • Escape

    Crawling on scarred knees
    over cold and hard flagstones.
    Escape to the light.

    A bit of a downbeat haiku, but it reflects the feel of the image. Another from Gloucester Cathedral.

  • Cathedral

    Through hallowed cloisters
    Where Benedictine monks trod,
    Silently praying.

    Gloucester Cathedral is a stunning building. The cloisters were featured as parts of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. If I can think of an appropriate haiku I might well post another image from here.
