Photos and occasional pomes

  • Vaping

    Is anything worse
    Than being shrouded in smoke?
    Smells of vanilla.

I don’t usually do street photography, but this pair caught my eye. Highlighted by a shaft of sunlight coming between the tall buildings of Nottingham;s Lace Market area, I just waited for the exhalation. I will never understand why anyone would deliberately damage their lungs, and look ridiculous at the same time.

  • Haunted

    The ghosts of past lives
    Wander the formal gardens,
    Feeding off your fear.

The stone steps leading up to the back of Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, from the Camelia House and formal gardens. It is known as the most haunted building in the county, and regular ghost hunts are organised for those prepared to be scared witless in the dark.

  • Splash

    Powering through the waves,
    Challenged by the white water.
    Trying not to drown.

At least you can’t see the face, so no problems with model release…
Amongst other things, Nottingham is home to the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont. It is a great place to visit for action shots of the paddlers practicing on the white water course.

  • Pointless

    Shall we play a game?
Please, not hide and seek again.
    You always find me.

Hiding in the long grass presents a problem for some. This deer is part of a herd in the local Stately home grounds – Wollaton Park. The hall is known for being Wayne Manor in one of the Batman films. The walls around the park are very old and thick, and when the film crew left they managed to knock down a great big chunk of it with one of the trucks. I would like to say it was repaired symapthetically with the old bricks, but that would not be the truth. There is a now a gleaming section of new orange brickwork. Why?

  • Goose Fair

    Chaotic and loud,
All the fun of the fairground.
    Laughter guaranteed,

An annual event in Nottingham, Goose Fair is one of the largest travelling fairs in Europe, second only to Hull apparently. Over three days it attracts around half a million visitors to around 350 rides at a site just outside the city centre. As an event I am not so enthusiastic, but photographically it can be rewarding.

  • Bright lights

    Bright lights of Light Night,
Blue clouds shroud the Council House
    As crowds crowd the square.

Light Night is an annual event in Nottingham that has been going on for a few years. There are displays all over the city centre, including a massive projection on to the Council House in Market Square.

  • Promotion

    End of the season,
    Promises made and fulfilled.
    Now for the playoffs.

This image was taken with my phone at the last home game of the season that Nottingham Forest won promotion. The atmosphere was celebratory, as they were in the playoffs to be promoted to the Premiership.

  • The Pub

    Huddled in warm bars,
As night falls across the town,
    Conversation hums.

This pub is across the road from Nottingham Castle. The night adds a touch of isolation and mystery. The group of drinkers seen through the misted window, enjoying a drink with friends (possibly) add a touch of human interest. The question is there – was it a Tuesday, and were they having fish and chips?

  • Best seats

    Best seat in the house?
I can’t even see the pitch.
    And my feet are wet.

Another from the flooding. This bench is normally set back at least 5 metres from the embankment, and has the City Ground (the WFCG) in the background. It looked an ideal season ticket purchase for the same people that bought London bridge.

  • High Water

    Driving rain persists,
    Flooding rivers burst their banks.
    Calm after the storm.

A little bit of minimalism from the River Trent in January last year. Although the image is minimalist, the effort required to achieve it was not. I think the time taken to learn the techniques were worth it, but hey – I am retired so what else was I going to do during those hours?
