  • Castle?

    Strong against the storm,
Home for the high and mighty.
    But peasants can look.

Is it a castle? Well, no it isn’t. Although it was originally built as a castle after the Norman conquest, it is now a faux-castle stately home located in the Vale of Belvoir, belonging to the Duke of Rutland.
I find it odd that Nottingham Castle very definitely looks like a manor house or stely home, and yet a stately home just a few miles down the road looks distinctly like a castle. But at least we peasants are allowed in the grounds to have a look round.

  • Castles in the Sand

    Rising from the dunes,
    Defence from a bygone age,
    But still standing strong.

Like Wales, the northeast coast of England is awash with old castles. Some are total ruins, but some are still actually lived in. One is Bamburgh Castle, sat atop sand dunes and looking out over the North Sea to the Farne Islands.

  • Windsor

    Must-do in Windsor
The long drive to the castle
    Home of monarchy.

Windsor Castle dominates the town. With Eton College just the other side of the river, I guess the Princes didn’t even have to get a bus to school.

    The roof needs doing –
    It has done for centuries.
    Can’t get the builders

Dunstanburgh Castle is one of several castles, in varying states of repair, along the north east coast of England.
