Haiku Blog – Pictures and Words

  • Bare Bones

    Aged by time and tide,
Bare bones where once stood structures
    To hold back the seas.

More minimalism from Spurn Point. The groynes at Spurn Point make for a really interesting few hours, and there is more to explore. Must go back.

  • White rock

    White rock and dark wood,
    Misty morning by the sea.
    Calm and serene view.

Some people do not like long exposure, but in this case I felt the untidy waves would distract from the main elements. Taken at Spurn Point on the east coast.

  • In a cave

    A cairn in a cave
One stone laid upon the next,
    A balancing act

Amazing what you find in the cliffs by the beach. I did not build it, I only found it and appreciated it.

  • Appear

    The pier would appear
to be no longer found here.
    Where it stood is clear
    .

Possibly one of the most photographed piers in England. The old pier at Swanage. I took this whilst on a photo competition day with Digital Camera Magazine. Unfortunately the other person in the contest failed to show, so I won every round and had the magazine article to myself.

  • Under the Boardwalk

    Under The boardwalk
    When the tide has receded
    Beauty can be found

Having spent a morning in the fog, I decided to explore under the pier at Newlyn in Cornwall. I left my phone on the ground, forgot it, and went back to rescue it as the incoming tide was less than 10cm away from disaster. Lady luck was smiling that day.

  • Alone again, naturally

    Taking in the view
    Loneliness is a mindset.
    Enjoy the silence.

Another Place is an installation by Anthony Gormley on the beach at Crosby. There are 100 statues, and there are many more dotted around the UK, as well as other countries. Anthony Gormley is also responsible for the Angel of the North. A little Adamsky effect added to isolate the statue even more.

  • Island view

    Distant Isles beckon,
Wreathed in cloud, shrouded from view,
    More rain on the way.

One reason Ireland is so green is the predictably unpredictable weather. Just sitting and watching the weather is a perfect stress relief.

  • Matchstick men

    The scene looks serene.
    Matchstick people on the sands,
    Not swimming – too cold.

Always amazing how eerily still it can feel, with a fog on the hills and an almost calm sea. A beach on the west coast of Ireland

  • View through a door

    Through the arched doorway
    Myths of legendary Kings,
    Arthurian legend.

Tintagel in Cornwall is allegedly the seat of King Arthur, of round table and Merlin fame. The castle ruins are quite spectacular, but the way out through this particular door is not for the faint hearted.

  • King Canute

    Unstoppable force
Set free by the wind and tide.
    Boy stands defiant

Taken during a stormy day at Scarborough on the east coast. I was waiting for a decent wave to photograph, and saw King Canute here facing down the seas. Needless to say, a fraction of a second later he was totally soaked. Wave 1 : Boy 0
